Today, the Maharashtra government, under Eknath Shinde’s leadership, endorsed a draft bill proposing a 10% reservation for the Maratha community in education and government employment, surpassing the 50% reservation threshold. A dedicated one-day Vidhan Sabha session on Tuesday focused on the pivotal agenda of Maratha reservation.
This special assembly occurred in the aftermath of Chief Minister Shinde and Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis providing assurances to Maratha reservation activist Manoj Jarange-Patil. Their commitment coincided with Jarange-Patil fasting continuously for seven days, with concerns arising about his deteriorating health.
The advocate had called for the prompt enforcement of the draft notification released by the Maharashtra government the previous month concerning Maratha reservation. Shinde stated that Maratha reservation would be granted in compliance with legal provisions after presenting the report in the dedicated assembly session.
Manoj Jarange-Patil addressed the Maratha reservation demand
Firmly dismissing any suggestion for a separate Maratha reservation beyond the 50% cap. He emphasized that the Maratha community’s reservation request from the OBC quota is compliant with the existing cap. Jarange-Patil advocated for providing reservation to Maratha community members based on Kunbi records and using the term ‘Sage Soyare.’ He warned that legislators attempting to divert the issue during the assembly session might be labeled as ‘anti-Maratha.’
MBCC Report on Maratha Reservation
The extension of reservation stemmed from a report presented by the Maharashtra Backward Class Commission (MBCC), led by Justice (Retired) Sunil Shukre. This commission, tasked with assessing the social and economic status of the Marathas, recommended a 10% reservation for the community in education and government employment, mirroring the allocation made in 2018 by the state government at that time.

He hinted to a potential cessation in discussions with the government starting Wednesday and the development of a strategy for additional protests. Jarange, currently undertaking a hunger strike at Antarwali Sarati in pursuit of the reservation demand, conveyed optimism that Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis would enact the ‘Sage Soyare’ legislation during the upcoming special session.
Maratha Reservation Under EWA Quota
In Maharashtra, there is an existing 10% allocation for the Economically Weaker Section (EWS), with Marathas being the primary recipients. Within the EWS quota, Marathas secure 85% of the reserved positions.
